Visit Gower Strange Days

Langland images

It's been months since I went anywhere near Gower. There have been a few reasons for that. First, I've had a problem with travel sickness over the last eighteen months or so, which has made any journey longer than 20-25 minutes an absolute nightmare. Secondly, poor old Alfie, my now deceased Cavalier King Charles spaniel, didn't travel well, either. The old guy barked incessantly on buses, which didn't go down well with fellow travellers, and I couldn't leave him alone in the house for more than an hour or two. Last, but certainly not least, we've had long periods of horrid weather over the last few months, making Gower trips far from desirable.

I headed to Langland on Monday afternoon. I had a runaround ticket, which I'd bought that morning, to take my cat, Liberty, to the PDSA. As the sun was shining, I thought it was too good an opportunity to miss. I had no idea how Jake would behave on the bus. I've only taken him on the bus once before, and then, we got off two stops after we got on. Despite looking a little perturbed to begin with, young Jake decided there was only one way to cope - he flopped down on the floor of the bus and went to sleep. He was an absolute delight to travel with.

There were quite a lot of people at Langland, mainly surfers, dog walkers and elderly folk out for a stroll. I managed to grab a couple of shots, but it was late afternoon, and hazy, which made lighting conditions very challenging for an amateur snapper like me. I tried fiddling around with exposure settings, and I think it helped somewhat.

Although these shots don't really show it, there was quite a swell, with waves crashing ashore.

Judging by the large number of surfers I saw, I think surfing conditions were pretty good. I know nothing about surfing, so I had to rely on my powers of deduction to make this assumption :).

I had hoped to take Jake on to the beach and walk around from Langland to Rotherslade, but the tide was too far in, cutting Rotherslade off from the main beach. Also, I spotted a large number of dogs on the beach, and I knew that if Jake got anywhere near them, I'd have an almighty job persuading him to come back to me - and I was scared a big wave would sweep him away.

I was surprised to find it so mild - it's January, after all. But I'm not complaining!

After wandering around for an hour or so, Jake started to look a little tired, so we headed up the hill to Langland Corner. We were lucky enough to find a number 2B bus waiting at the bus stop, so we hopped aboard.

Jake flopped down and went to sleep, whilst I enjoyed a very pleasant journey back into town, via Limeslade, Bracelet Bay and along the sea front. I hope to introduce him to Rhossili and/or Port Eynon soon. I suspect my travel sickness was caused by taking strong pain killers. I've since switched to a different type of pain killer, so fingers crossed, I should be okay.

Ravishing pictures, Siani - but hat first one is the real prize. When blown up and with that solitary figuer,it is a winner.
I am glad you were able to get out and hope the sickness really is a thing of the past.

Great to see you out about in Gower again. Ever thought of gathering all your gower posts together to make a Gower travels guide website? It would attract good googleadd revenue too.
