Oh, fir goodness sake!

I've just read a rather bizarre report emanating from Russia. Yet it has nothing to do with aliens, yetis or anything else paranormal. Surgeon Vladimir Kamashev, based at Izhevsk in the Urals, prepared to operate on 28-year-old Artyom Sidorkin, to remove a suspected cancerous tumour from a lung. Because the patient was in severe pain, and coughing up blood, the surgeon and his team were 100% certain it was lung cancer. However, the medics got the shocks of their lives when they opened Sidorkin up. Instead of the expected cancerous tumour, they found a small spruce tree. Seriously.

The Daily Mirror quoted Dr. Kamashev as saying: "I thought I was hallucinating. I asked my assistant to have a look: 'Come and see this – we've got a fir tree here'. He nodded in shock. I blinked three times as I sure I was seeing things."

The medics believe Sidorkin must have inhaled a seed or bud, which later sprouted into a small fir tree, and grew inside his lung. Sidorkin said he was relieved not to have cancer, but added: "it was very painful. But to be honest I did not feel any foreign object inside me".

I saw that headline! The number of times I read headlines on the Yahoo page and think, 'is it April 1st?'
