Conked out again

Lucretia conked out again after five minutes. I did another restore, and I've got her back online again, but the main problem is that the computer suddenly locks up when browsing the Internet, and cannot be unlocked without switching it off. When I turn it back on - it's bye bye Internet. I think the Ethernet card may be faulty, so I'm going to see if disabling it before I connect to the wireless network, will stop the freezing. I doubt it. But it's worth a try. If not - I've retrieved all my data, so even if I have to use Godzilla for a while, at least I have all my images, etc.

What a night you've had!

Have you thought that Lucretia's modem might be effed? Stephen had that sort of problem once (freezing when accessing the internet and needing to be switched off manually.) Our very friendly and helpful computer magician fitted a new modem at little (comparative!) cost, and it worked fine afterwards.

I don't use Lucretia's onboard modem to connect to the Net. I use cable broadband - which means an external cable modem connected to the same outlet as my cable TV. The cable modem works fine when plugged into the USB port on Godzilla. I can also get online with Lucretia for a short time with a wireless connection, but the wireless card keeps uninstalling itself. The ethernet card won't work at all.

I suspect the PCI cardbus controller is effed - it provides a common bridge between both network cards and the motherboard. I don't know if that's an integral part of the motherboard, or a replaceable component. Someone told me it's replaceable and only costs a couple of quid, but I haven't checked it out yet.

The problem I have, is that the whole laptop will need to be taken apart just to diagnose the problem. If it's not cost-effective to fix it, I'll still have to pay about £40 just for someone to pull it apart, look at it and put it back together again. As it is, that's £40 I'd sooner put towards a new desktop, at the moment.

I'll be opening Lucretia up soon, to see if it's just a case of a loose network card - which I can fix myself. Wish me luck!

Wishing you every scrap of luck available!
I'm not (quite!) as scared of a desktop's works now as I was (after all, we have that magician available) but a laptop looks impossible.

I'm sorry to hear Lucretia is still having problems, but I am SO SO SO glad to hear you got all your data backed up.
