Thursday Thirteen

Thirteen Quotes about Ageing

I went out to do some shopping today. Alas, everywhere I went, I suffered severe delays caused by gangs of elderly folk getting in my way. There's nothing to do in such situations other than smile and be patient, because old age is an inescapable fact of life, and it's not their fault they can't move out of the way as fast as they once could. The frustration also had a positive side. It planted the seeds of an idea for my Thursday Thirteen theme today, so here are thirteen quotes by famous people, about the process of ageing.

1.... It is sad to grow old but nice to ripen ~ Brigitte Bardot.

2.... You can't help getting older, but you don't have to get old ~ George Burns.

3.... Youth is wasted on the young ~ George Bernard Shaw.

4.... Old age is no place for sissies ~ Bette Davis.

5.... An archaeologist is the best husband a woman can have. The older she gets the more interested he is in her ~ Agatha Christie.

6.... The really frightening thing about middle age is the knowledge that you'll grow out of it ~ Doris Day.

7.... Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at twenty or eighty. Anyone who keeps learning stays young. The greatest thing in life is to keep your mind young ~ Henry Ford.

8.... Old age is a shipwreck ~ Charles de Gaulle.

9.... Middle age is when your age starts to show around your middle ~ Bob Hope.

10... Forty is the old age of youth; fifty the youth of old age ~ Victor Hugo.

11... Old age is like a plane flying through a storm. Once you're aboard, there's nothing you can do ~ Golda Meir.

12... There is still no cure for the common birthday ~ John Glenn.

13... Wrinkles should merely indicate where smiles have been ~ Mark Twain.

Oh I love these! I was at the pharmacy yesterday for multivitamin tablets, and came back with the wrong ones. Took them back today and changed them for the ones meant for older people - I obviously need them.

I like #12. Espically since I've hit the downhill side of 20.

"You can't stay young forever, but you can be immature the rest of your life." I don't remember where I saw this but it seemed to fit! Great list!

Great quotes. I so agree that youth is wasted on the young. Ugh! If I'd know then...

Great T13. I also like the quote "You're never too old to have a happy childhood."

No. 13 is very sweet. I like Betty Davis's attitude and Agatha Christie's outlook, though! Fun post. Thanks.

I don't remember the Twain quote---it doesn't really sound like him. So much of what you say rings true...speaking as someone of stately years. I also like Nap Warden's addition.

Those are great quotes about aging. But getting older doesn't necessarily mean slowly down. There are plenty of people in their 70s and 80s who are still very active, and eve run marathons!

George Burns had some good ones.

I've always loved him.

That's a good list! I thought 3 was Oscar Wilde, but what do I know!
