Burma recruits child soldiers

It's been a while since I posted on important world issues, months probably, as I try to keep this blog quite lighthearted these days. I woke up at a stupid hour today (just before 3 am - thanks, cats) and started reading the early morning news. I came across an article in today's Guardian that horrified me. I didn't think the Burmese military regime could sink any lower than recent events reported in the media. I should have known better.

It seems the Burmese are now recruiting ten year olds into their army, due to a shortfall in manpower. Children are threatened with arrest, or beaten, to force them to join. One child was recruited despite being just 4ft 3 in tall and weighing only 70 lbs (5 stone). Unofficial militia groups in Burma also recruit children into their ranks, although many such organizations have greatly reduced the number of child recruits. But the official Burmese army is the greatest offender. You can read more about this horrifying and heartbreaking transgression of human rights here.

I just saw that story and I was horified but not surprise. Very little of what the junta does would surprise me. Sadly we also see stories of children pressed into military service all too often.

I believe it happens in all over the world, especially in the African continent. I saw it in the Blood Diamond, Leonardo DiCaprio starring.
